Cannelton - An Indiana Stated Police detective said he and other investigators looking into last week's death of a Cannelton man are waiting for final autopsy results before finishing their work - and submitting the case to the county prosecutor's office.
Sgt. Steve Chambers, one of several ISP detectives and senior troopers investing the Valentine's Day death of Keith Weatherholt, said results of toxicology tests taken may not be available for several weeks. However Chambers said the case remains an 'active' investigation.
Weatherholt, 48, of 345 W. Seventh St., was found in his bed by a cousin, identified in court records as *** ***********. In a search warrant affidavit filed within hours of the body's discovery, Trooper Mark Seifert said he was called to the scene by County Coroner Darrell Riley. In the News story published last Thursday, Riley said he called police after noticing brusing to Weatherholt's body.
Seifert, in his affidavit, confirmed Riley's observation, stating it appeared Weatherholt had been assaulted. The trooper cited injuries to the man's face and the side of his head. Seifert also reported Weatherholt's nose appeared to be broken. Police obtained a search warrant to the home, an unattached garage and other outbuildings and of vehicles on the property.
An autopsy conducted in Tell City pointed to pneumonia as the cause of death, but officers said they were trying to determine if a physical attack had been a contributing factor. In his request for a search warrant, Seifert said he and troopers were looking for "evidence of an assault" that could had led to Weatherholt's death.
Keith Weatherholt wasn't feeling well the night before his body was discovered, court documents stated. *** *********** told officers he had bathed his cousin and then offered him a bowl of soup and a glass of water before helping him to bed around 7:30 pm. *** ************, who police said had been caring for Keith Weatherholt and may have been living in the home, found the body the following morning around 8 am.
Seifert, who was not working Friday, couldn't be reached for comment, but Chambers said the injuries noticed by officers remain one focus of the investigation. Chambers confirmed that evidence at the scene indicated Weatherholt had been assaulted. "Hopefully, the final autopsy results and the report will give us the answers," he said.
Private funeral services for Weatherholt were held last week.
