Obituaries: Wichita [Kansas]Eagle; Saturday, November 27, 2010 -- The Newton [Kansas] Kansan; Saturday, November 27, 2010.

Laura Rosella (Ewert) Slocombe, 96, of Peabody went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ Thursday (Nov. 25, 2010-Thanksgiving Day)in Abilene, Kansas where she had lived for the last few months of her life.

Laura was born on a farm west of Aulne, the daughter of John Albert "Bert" and Anna (Welsh) Ewert. They later moved to a farm west of Peabody. She attended school in Peabody and graduated from high school in 1932.

She was a member of Peabody First United Methodist church all of her life. It was there she first met Vernon Slocombe. In 1933, they were married in an outdoor wedding at her parents' farm.

Laura loved God, Vernon, her family and life. She always saw to her family's needs before her own. She had many friends and enjoyed sharing her garden produce, her flowers and her baked goods. She learned to sew at an early age and used her skills in making clothing for her daughter, Elaine, her
granddaughters and herself.

She enjoyed piecing quilts and made many for family and friends. Laura enjoyed living in the country. She had been a supportive, go-for-parts, cook-for-hired-men, drivethe-
wheat-truck farmer's wife, but after 30 years, she was ready to pass things on to Warren and Phyllis.

In 1963, Vernon and Laura moved to town. She had beautiful flowers at their home on Sycamore Street, and she had time for sewing and quilting. It was about that time Vernon and Laura began going to Texas to enjoy the warm winters.

Being a member of several clubs gave Laura time with her friends. She was a 4-H leader, and active in the First United Methodist Church, Eastern Star, Progressive Mothers Club, History Club, Up and Doing HDU, ladies church groups and several quilting groups.

She is survived by her sons, Ed and wife Ann of New Braunfels, Texas,Warren and wife Phyllis of Manhattan, and Elaine Sears and husband Bull of Abilene; six grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon in 2001; her sister, Edna Mae Ewert of Peabody; and her brothers, John of Tulsa, Okla., Ralph of Peabody and Harold of Marion.

Visitation was at 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sunday, November 28th at Baker Funeral Home in Peabody. Funeral service were held at 10:30 a.m.Monday at First United Methodist Church in Peabody. With burial following at Prairie Lawn Cemetery in Peabody.

Memorials were suggested to the Peabody Community Foundation.
