BABCOCK GENEALOGY- Stephen Babcock:
**********************************
Arthur came to North Loup early in November 1872; this has been his home since then.
His knowledge was extensive though his schooling was meager. He added to the country school, one year at Alfred College in New York, and one year at Ann Arbor Law College, from which on account of previous study, he was graduated, but wide reading
and study made him a well read man.
After a couple of business enterprises as a young man, he entered into a partnership with his brother, E. J. Babcock, who was practicing law. But during the drought years of the late 1890's he thought it best to take up some other line of work.
For several years he managed the largest general store in town in partnership with W. E. Gowen. However, his mind always ran to machinery, so when the automobile came into use, he and his brother opened a garage which he ran successfully for several years.
He was one of the builders of the town, always interested in anything for its betterment.
It is thought that he had not an enemy, which was not because he was too weak-minded to antagonize anyone, but because he recognized that other people have honest opinions he should respect even if he could not agree with them. He could debate with anyone on almost any subject but leave no hard feelings on either side. Perhaps the best sign of his character was shown in his love for children whether his own or not, and the ease with which he made friends with all of them.
