1928 – 2012

Velma John, 83, of Thayer, KS passed away June 10, 2012 at Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita, KS.
Velma was born in Thayer, KS on August 28, 1928 the daughter of Delmer Leon and Ethel May (Crowl) Woolery. She graduated from Thayer High School in 1945. She married James DeMoss John on March 9, 1946 in Chanute, KS. He preceded her in death on September 11, 1986.
She is a member of the Thayer Christian Church where she was active in the Thursday Ladies Bible Study. She was also a member of the Coffee Club where she met ladies at 169 Café for breakfast several times a week. She enjoyed crocheting and quilting.
Velma is survived by seven children, Cathy Heit and husband Pat of Dennis, KS, Janet Babcock and husband Larry of Thayer, KS, Sharon Hougardy and husband Alan of Thayer, KS, Harold John and wife Paula of Thayer, KS, Betty Wheeler and husband Steve of Thayer, KS, Mary Jo Hall and husband Dave of Keokuk, IA, and Robert John and wife Ann of Thayer, KS; one sister, Lois Raida of Thayer, KS; one brother, Larry Woolery and wife Joy of Thayer, KS; and 22 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 15, 2012 at Thayer Christian Church in Thayer, KS. Burial will follow in Thayer Cemetery.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, June 14, 2012 from 6 until 8 p.m. at Thayer Christian Church.
Memorials in her name may be made to Thayer Christian Preschool, Thayer Christian Funeral Dinner Committee, or NMRMC Care Car and may be left with the funeral home.
