Irvine was born in Garfield township, Clay County, SD to William and Hulda Eklund. Irvine moved to Albert Lea, MN at a young age with his parents. He started school in Albert Lea and when his family returned to the Dalesburg/Hub City area, he finished grade school at Marshalltown school.
Irvine married Florence Johnson September 5, 1936 at Parker, SD. They farmed south of Hub City and lived in a house built by Irvine's grandfather, JP Eklund. In 1944 they moved to a farm three miles west of Beresford. He retired from farming in 1974 and moved into Beresford.
Irvine and Florence had two sons, Errol William, and one still living.
