Richard L. Chisholm, Sr., 76, of Clinton, passed away, on Flag Day, June 14, 2012 at St. Luke's Hospital - Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Funeral Services and Masonic Rose Criox Services will be 10:00am, Monday, June 18, 2012 at the First United Methodist Church. Burial will follow at the Rock Island National Cemetery - Rock Island, Illinois with military honors being conducted by the Moline American Legion. A meal will follow at the Clinton Masonic Center at 3:00pm on Monday. Visitation will be on Sunday, Father's Day from 1:00-4:00pm at the Clinton Chapel Snell-Zornig Funeral Homes and Crematory. Serving as pallbearers will be Richard Chisholm, Jr., Jeff Chisholm, Gary Brown, Darryl Rogers, Chris Camacia, Rob Hanson, Chris Busse, and Anthony Brewer.
Richard Lee Chisholm was born on March 15, 1936 in Peoria, Illinois, the son of Karl and Rosemary (Fox) Chisholm. In 1941 his parents moved their family to San Francisco, California for an Adventurous Childhood, in the wharf, piers, zoo, ocean, golf course, and airport. The Bay City connected them to different cultures, races, and traditions.
In 1953 he entered the Army Reserves and four months later he went on Active Duty Basic Training at Ft. Ord, California for Basic Infantry Training and then to Advanced Training at Ft. Lewis, Washington. From 1953-1954 he was assigned to Pusan, Korean, and Pho Hang Dong, Korea with the Special Category Army with Air Force. From 1954-1958 he was stationed to Oakland Army Base, California with further assigned to Travis Army Base in Fairfield, California. From 1958-1959 he was assigned to the 7th Army HQ in Stuttgart, Germany. From 1959-163 he was assigned to the 163rd Military Police Company Presidio of San Francisco.
From 1963-1965 he was stationed in Bangkok, Thailand. From 1956-1968 he was assigned to the Office of Military Instruction after receiving two promotions was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment. In 1968 he received orders for Vietnam and served in Vietnam from 1968-1969 with the USARV IG Team NCO IC of Team 4. He made Inspections and Training to various units within the country. In June of 1969 he was ordered to Germany and while on leave was debrief and orders changed to Burlington, Iowa as the US Army Station Commander for four counties. From 1970-1973 he opened the 1st Army Recruiting Station in Clinton, Iowa and responsible for two counties. He retired in 1973 from the United States Army after 20 years, four months, and 27 days.
He received the Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal (2), Good Conduct Medal (6 awards), National Defense Medal (2 awards), Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal (4 combat awards), Korean Defense Award, Vietnam Service Campaign, Expert Pistol and Rifle Badge, Expert Driver Badge, and the Recruiter Badge.
After retiring from the Army he worked at Swifts and Co., from 1979-1998 as a lumberyard worker, moving and storage warehouse manager, sales, and truck driver. He then served from 1999-2006 as Secretary/Recorder for the Clinton Scottish Rite Bodies.
He received his GED, completed his Associates Degree from â??The North American School of Conservation and Forestry, was a member and Past Master of Western Star Lodge #100, Clinton Scottish Rite Bodies, Past Commander of the Clinton AMVETS Post #28, KAABA Shrine, and the Clinton Hi-12 Club. He enjoyed bowling, hunting, fishing, camping, boating, and traveling.
He is survived by four children: Debbria Haynes of Marion, Iowa; Robin (Gary) Brown of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Richard (Jan) Chisholm of Moline, Illinois, and Donna Paulus of Orlando, Florida; His Best Half of 20 years: Nancy Busse of Clinton and her children: Craig (Pascha) Busse, Chris (Pam) Busse, and Michelle (Ron) Younts all of Clinton; nine grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his brother: Karl Louie Chisholm, and a step-grandson: Brian Brown.
Memorials can be made the Clinton Masonic Center or the Shriners Hospital Transportation Fund.
