Thomas' parents were Charles Gathings Jr. b abt 1794 and Clara Bailey. Thomas had 4 other brothers who fought in the Civil War. One, Graham Gathings, died in a hospital in Richmond, VA in 4 Jul 1864. One Charles Gathings was killed 27 Oct 1862 at Gaines Mill in Petersburg,VA. The other 2 (William and Sherwood)returned to their homes after the Civil War.

Thomas was married to Eliza Jones in 1859 at Anson County, NC. They had 4 children that I know of: William Francis, James Thomas, Sarah Jane, and Thomas C.

Thomas enlisted in Company K, North Carolina 26th Infantry Regiment on 10 May 1862. He was at Gettysburg on 1 Jul 1863. He was killed crossing the creek at Willoughby Run. He was shot during the first few shots fired that morning. I was told he was buried in a mass grave at Gettysburg.
