WALTER ALEXANDER RUSSELL CLYDE was the son of Thomas Brown Clyde and Rachel Knox Clyde. His parents immigrated to the United States from Scotland through the Port of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada in May, 1910. Taken from Canadian Passenger Lists.
In his younger days, Walter enjoyed playing tennis and baseball. He was a member of Boy Scouts of America Troop #117 in Kansas City, Missouri.
Walter graduated from Paseo High School in Kansas City, Missouri on June 10, 1932. Following his high school graduation, he accompanied his Mother to Scotland to visit his relatives.
He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II, stationed for a time at Kessler Field. Then in 1945, the Army transferred Walter to Wichita, Kansas where he worked as an Aircraft Mechanic for Cessna Aircraft until December 10th, 1945 when he was discharged from the Army. During his time as an Aircraft Mechanic Daddy worked on most of the famous World War II planes including the Enola Gay. I have a photo of him in the cockpit of the Enola Gay with a huge smile on his face!
Walter married Elma Louise Rhodes on December 24, 1943 in Kansas City, Wyandotte County, Kansas while he was home on leave. Elma was the daughter of Vida Elma Fowler Rhodes and Eugene Rhodes.
Daddy worked for the Shawnee Mission Post Office as a lettercarrier for over 30 years. Walter was an active member in the National Association of Letter Carriers. He received the Merit Award for Outstanding Service from the United States Post Office because he rescued a man on his postal route who had locked himself in the trunk of his car. Walter was able to pry open the trunk and saved the man's life!
He loved bowling on the Lettercarriers League sponsered by the Milgram's Food Store. In 1950 his team won the League Championship. He was a member of the Bowling Team for most of his adult life.
Travel was one of Walter's greatest joys! He took the family on trips across the United States, Canada and Mexico every summer...staying a month each year.
After his retirement, Walter also enjoyed reading, traveling and horse racing.
Daddy had an amazing sense of humor and a hilarious roaring laugh! We miss you, Dad!
He's buried at Chapel Hill Cemetery in Kansas City, Wyandotte, Kansas with his parents Rachel Knox and Thomas Brown Clyde and his wife, Elma.
