Mary Ellen died in New Hampshire at her daughter's home - Leah Rich Hubert. Her remains were moved to Winsted later the same year of her death. The last several years of her life, she spent her time visiting all of her children and grandchildren, living with them for weeks/months at a time. After she divorced her husband, she continued raising her children, as she had done before. She was a religious woman, and would spend hours in her rocking chair reading her Bible. She knew it front to back. The last child, Carroll Erving Rich, died in 1959 in Lowell, MA
