Pioneer Laid to Rest
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon for James E. Sullivan at the Sanish Baptist church with the Rev. Jack Reif officiating with Director R. O. Logan in charge. Burial was made in the local cemetery beside his brother-in-law, Axell Watterberg. The pallbearers were L. G. Larson, H. A. Jahnke, Caleb Johnson, Marty Lund, Ray Lacey and Fred LaRocque, all old time friends and neighbors.
James Edward Sullivan was born in New York City, July 4, 1879 and was 70 years, 6 months and 13 days of age at the time of his death at Thibadoux, La. He was the son of John and Mary Sullivan.
He came to Big Bend township in 1916 where he homesteaded and later farmed for several years. He did much road construction work, building Highway 23, the first highway in McKenzie county and also on the roads north of Sanish. He was a veteran of the Spanish American war, and served in the Philippines.
He was married to Louise Watterberg in 1916 and to this union six children were born: Alice, Mrs. F. K. Goodall, Sanish; John, Houston, Texas; Doris, Mrs. H. J. Chiasson, Thibadoux, La., Molly, Mrs. Victor H. Watts, Seattle, Wash., Ruth, Mrs. Chas Predreauville, New Orleans, La., and Roger, Lamont, Idaho. Mrs. Sullivan was with him at the time of his death and came up from Louisiana and is at present with her daughter, Mrs. Goodall. Also attending the funeral was Miss Sarah Watterberg of Minot.
Jim was a big man with a heart just as large, a good neighbor and friend. He had a host of friends near as well as wherever he was. He will be missed by his family and friends and we extend our deepest sympathy.
