DAN GRACEY RITES APRIL 17

Dan Gracey of Everest, Kansas died early Sunday morning, April 14, 1985 at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas after the car he was driving was involved in an accident on U.S. 59 near Atchison, Kansas. He was taken to the Atchison Hospital by ambulance, then rushed by Life Flight to St. Luke's Hospital, where he died before receiving treatment for multiple trauma.

Services were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 17, at St. Matthews Lutheran Church, Nortonville, Kansas, with Wilbur Claude, interim pastor of the church, officiating. Interment was in the Lancaster Cemetery. Memorials were given to St. Matthews Lutheran Church.

Daniel George Gracey was born in Broken Bow, Nebraska on April 13, 1953, the son of Jim and Carol (Hircock) Gracey.

He attended grade school and graduated from Holyoke High School, where he was active in sports and named to the All State football and basketball teams

His records in long jump, 60 yard low hurdles and 440 yard dash made in junior high still hold as well as five high school track and several basketball records.

He was a graduate of St. John's College, Winfield, in 1973 and attended Western State College, Gunnison. While in St. John's he was named Basketball MVP in 1972 and named to the All Regional Team by the Kansas Athletic Association.

He was one of five St. John's athletes selected for the 1973 edition of Outstanding College Athletes of America and set a new college career scoring record with 1900 points in two season.

He married Ruth Westermann August 22, 1972 at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Nortonville. They moved to the Everest area in 1975, where he was a pattern handler at Rockwell Mfg. Co. in Atchison.

He was a member of St. Matthew's Lutheran Church and of Local 6943 United Steelworkers Union of Atchison.

Dan enjoyed all sports, woodworking, hunting, fishing and camping in the summer. He enjoyed being with his family.

Survivors include his wife Ruth; two sons, Aaron age 11 and Kelly, age 7; and one daughter, Jennifer, age 6; his father Jim Gracey and Lorraine of Holdrege Nebraska; his mother Carol Schmidt and Merle of Holyoke; two brothers, Michael Gracey of Holyoke, and Terry Gracey of Springfield, Missouri, and one sister, Susan Davidson of Fremont, California and many friends.
