Platt, a merchant and manufacturer, was born in Angelica, New York and received his education there. He moved to St. Louis to fulfill his desire to see something of the world. He enlisted in Company B of Col. Alton R. Easton's regiment of the Missouri Volunteers for service in the Mexican War. He served a few months and then returned to St. Louis where he opened a drug store at the corner of 7th & Franklin. In 1862, Platt ventured into the sale of paints, oils & glass. He opened Platt and Thornburgh, a white lead plant, in 1865. It was eventually absorbed by the National Lead Company. The commercial house of Platt & Thornburgh incorporated as the Platt & Thornburgh Paint & Glass Company and began dealing paints, glass & kindred wares.
Platt was a business man of unswerving integrity and his friendship was something to be sought and highly prized.
