John Link was born on February 18, 1879 in Austria, the son of Johann Link (ca 1841- ) and Anna (Muhl) Link (ca 1843- ).

He Left Augsburg for Le Havre, France with about $50.00 in his pocket and left Europe on a Norwegian ship on the Conard line in June 1900, bound for America.

He landed in New York and was there briefly before moving on to New Bedford, Massachusetts to work as a weaver in the cotton mills.

He sent for Anna Mencl (still in Augsburg, Germany) to join him. John had been boarding with the Franz Mencl family while working in Augsburg, and had developed a close relationship with Anna.

They were married on September 26, 1900 in new York City, the day after she arrived.
