Byrda Ellen Gathright, a longtime resident of the Hayward district of Banks, died in her home Sept. 20, 2001. She was 84.
A graveyard service will be held Sept. 28, 3 p.m., in Hayward Cemetery, N.W. Cedar Canyon Road at Hayward Road in the Banks area. Pastor Harold Thomas, a missionary with the Friends Church, will officiate. Following the service, an open house for family and friends will be held at 52320 N.W. Cedar Canyon Rd., Banks, adjoining the cemetery.
Mrs. Gathright was born May 30, 1917, in Texhoma, Okla., the daughter of James Leonard and Nancy (Derrick) Leonard. She was raised in the Midwest. She graduated from William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She later completed a Master's Degree in Library Science at the University of Southern California.
She married Roger Gathright on Jan. 23, 1943, in San Diego, Calif. After WWII, while living in Phoenix, Ariz., she was instrumental in establishing the Arizona State Library System. She also worked briefly for the Southern Pacific Railroad.
As her husband pursued his railroad career, she moved to the Los Angeles, Calif., area and later to a ranch close to Yosemite National Park in California.
During her years there, she collected and cataloged all of the books for a community library in Groveland, Calif., a town 50-miles from the nearest public library.
The family purchased property and built a home in the Hayward district near Banks when their youngest daughter decided to attend college in Oregon.
Her career revolved around books and children. After working in the library at North Island Naval Training Station in San Diego, Calif., she worked in school and public libraries in Phoenix, Ariz., Inglewood, Stockton and Merced, Calif., as well as Forest Grove, Dilley and Gales Creek. She taught elementary school students at Hardin Flat, Elmore and Big Oak Hat-Groveland schools in California. She also taught at Forest Dale School in Scoggins Valley. Before her retirement in 1983, both she and her two daughters were teachers or librarians in Forest Grove Schools.
After her retirement, she did volunteer work coordinating school book club orders for Tom McCall Upper Elementary School and St. Francis School in Roy.
Until just before her death, she was actively involved in processing books for the accelerated reader programs at Tom McCall and St. Francis schools.
She was a member of the Hillsboro Friends Church. She enjoyed reading, knitting, storytelling and crafts.
Survivors include her husband Roger Gathright of Banks; daughters Janet Gathright and Nancy Gathright, both of Banks; brothers James Leonard of Santa Rosa, Calif., L.P. Leonard of Manteca, Calif., and Francis Leonard of Rose Hills, Kan.; nieces, nephews and members of her extended family in Banks.
The family suggest remembrances be contributions to the Banks Public Library, 111 Market St., Banks 97106.
Forest Grove Memorial Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
