On August 28, 2011, LEVEN C. LEATHERBURY, of San Diego passed away peacefully at San Diego Hospice Glenbrook. He was born in Baltimore, Maryland, October 23, 1922. He received a BFA degree from Maryland Institute of Art and his MA and Ed.D from Columbia University. His educational career began in Baltimore teaching art at the elementary, secondary and college levels, as well as supervision. Leven married Katherine Jacob in November 1949. It was in Baltimore their two sons, Leven Jr. and Charles Edward, were born. In 1957 the family moved to San Diego where he served as Curriculum Specialist for Art Education in the San Diego City Schools for 26 years. He was the first president of the California Art Education Association (CAEA) when it was organized in 1965. Since then, he was active in the development of the first state Framework for Art Education, in the adoption of State Instructional Materials in Art, and in numerous conferences. In addition, he is a past president of the National Art Education Association (NAEA) and a past national director of NAEA's Supervision / Administration Division. In 1982, Leven was named "Art Educator of the Year" by NAEA. In 1984, Leven was editor of Arts and Activities Magazine and was an independent consultant for art education. He continued to serve CAEA as a Conference Administrator until 1992. His greatest accomplishment was serving the cause of art teaching throughout the state. He will be remembered as "Pop Pop" by his six granddaughters Rachel, Carleigh, Sarah, Kyle, Kelsey, and Lauren. His sons, Leven Jr. and Chuck, and two loving daughters-in-laws, will miss him deeply.

Leven lost his wife, Katherine, almost two years ago and will be buried next to her at the Loudon Park Cemetery, Baltimore, MD on Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at 11 AM. Arrangements by Mitchell-Wiedefeld Funeral Home, Inc.
