Mom and her sister Darlene were living with their parents on St. Mary's Blvd in Jefferson City, Mo. They ordered a load of wood. Dad delivered the wood to their home. As he was leaving, he looked up to an upstairs window and saw Mom for the first time. Mom hurried up and hid behind the curtains.

Dad's parents lived nearby on Georgia Street. Dad watched Mom walk to church on the street in front of his house. They also worked together at Elms Diner. Mom was a carhop and Dad flipped hamburgers.

Mom and Dad were married in 1940. Their first born son Larry Leon died when only a month old. Mom never recovered from this tragedy and spoke of him her entire life.

At the outbreak of WW II, Dad went to Portland, Oregon to work in the shipyards. Mom went by train with baby Doug to Portland. She had to sit on her suitcase. Dad was drafted and was sent to Europe in 1943. Dad was in the 2nd landing on Normandy Beach and drove the 2nd tank into Paris at their Liberation. He met General Eisenhower who came to cheer up the troops. The only injury he had was when a bullet grazed his ear.
Mom went back to Jefferson City, saved her money and bought a home. Dad returned home in 1945. Mary Ellen was born in 1946.
Mom and Dad were married 60 years.
