Australian World War 2 fighter ace. He was born at Petersham in the inner west of Sydney, and was studying dentistry when he joined the Royal Australian Air Force on June 24, 1940. Allotted service number 402150, he flew with 452 Squadron, RAAF with RAF Fighter Command and was credited six kills and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal (DFM). On October 11, 1941 he was shot down over France and taken prisoner of war. He escaped on August 11, 1942 and after months in Warsaw made his way to Paris where he was living when the city was liberated. For his escape and evasion he was awarded the Military Cross (MC). He was the only Australian serviceman ever awarded both the MC and DFM.
