Bert Broadwell, one of the employes (sic) at the A.T.& S.F. depot, met with a fatal accident on Tuesday morning while riding on a hand car near the round house. In attempting to get the car out of the way of an approaching freight train, he was thrown backwards on the track striking on his head and being rendered insensible. He was taken up in this condition and never recovered consciousness--dying on the afternoon of Wednesday. Bert. was well known here and universally liked, and his death casts a gloom over the hearts of his many friends. He was buried to-day--Thursday--the remains being attended to the grave by the Rifle Co., of which he was a member.

Yesterday afternoon, when it became apparent that Bert Broadwell could not recover, Mr. Lew Humphrey, and three other young men, secured a hand car and went to Madison for Mr. Charlie Broadwell, who is in charge of Sherman & Richardson's branch store at that place. The boys made the trip in about five hours, which was better time than they could have made with a team.
-----------------
The funeral of Herbert P. Broadwell took place at the Congregational church this afternoon at 2 o'clock. Dr. Cordley conducted the services. A large number of friends filled the church, and by their presence at the last sad rites expressed their respect for their friend who was so suddenly taken from them. The Emporia Rifles, of which Bert was a member, were out in force, and took charge of the body to the grave.
