MAYO Laura Lee (Arms) Mayo, age 91, of Upper Arlington, passed away Friday, June 13, 2008, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. She was born June 1, 1917, in Celina, TN, a daughter of the late Archie "Tommy" and Dayse (Stone) Arms.
Laura Lee attended David Lipscomb College and began teaching in a one room schoolhouse in Kentucky. She worked for the TVA and then during World War II, Laura Lee was a secretary in the engineering department at the Oak Ridge Nuclear Plant. She graduated from Harding University with a degree in Business Administration. She then left for Juneau, Alaska, where she was a Church of Christ missionary for 14 years and met her husband Ronald I. Mayo, P.E., of Brewer, Maine. In 1960, they moved to Upper Arlington where after raising her family, she retired as a substitute teacher for grades K thru 3 in the Upper Arlington and Hilliard Schools. She was a longtime member of Fishinger & Kenny Roads Church of Christ where she loved leading the women's Bible study.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Ronald I. Mayo, P.E. in November, 2005 and her sisters and brothers Alice Overstreet, Edith Bilbrey, Amos Arms and Walter Arms.
A loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she is survived by her children, Ronald I. (Patricia) Mayo II, P.E. of Upper Arlington, Sharon E. (Dwight) Mathias of Columbus and Thomas H. (Janet) Mayo of East Greenville, NC; grandchildren, Ronald III, Ryan, Ross and Reid Mayo, Harvey (Stacy), Cassie, Arielle, Caleb (JoAnna) and Joseph Mathias, Maria and Laura Lee Mayo; great-grandchildren, Michelle and Alorah Mathias and Daniel Acevedo-Mayo; sister, Helen Arms Wells of Knoxville, TN; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
She loved teaching, baking and spending time with her family. Throughout her life, she had the ability to develop a special rapport with young people. A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 20, 2008, at Fishinger & Kenny Roads Church of Christ, 1130 Fishinger Road, with Greg Tidwell officiating. Family will receive friends at the church one hour prior from 10-11 a.m. Friday. Private inurnment at Union Cemetery Mausoleum.
