Thomas Lay Abbott, 85, last surviving child of Myron and Mary Leavitt Abbott and early settler of Sutherland, died October 30, 1990 in California.
He was born August 8, 1905 in Richfield. He moved with his parents to Millard County at the age of six to a farm west of Delta. This settlement was later named Sutherland. His growing years were spent on the farm, and though it was very hard, he had nothing but fond memories of his life on the desert. He married Lucille Egan February 17, 1926 in the Salt Lake Temple and made the move to California where he took up residence in San Mateo and lived for thirty five years.
Music was always one fo the great pleasures of his life. He was a member of the prestigious Orpheon Male Chorus, which had a membership of 60 men from the San Francisco Peninsula. He was an active member of the LDS Church serving in many teaching and leadership positions, Quorum President, Seminary Teacher, Stake Missionary, and Ward Bishopric. He also served as Branch President in the Sierra Foothills in Placer County, where he designed the ward boundary lines, arranged to purchase a building and helped convert it into a chapel.
Retiring in 1974, he moved to Meadow Vista, CA where the climate was good and "ideal for a farm boy to return and revert to pioneer, wood cutter and gardner..." For the last many years he has served as Patriarch of the vast Abbott family holding all together with his love and dedication. He shall be greatly missed by all who have looked to him for advice and guidance.
He is survived by two sons, Donald, Texas; Stephen, California; 12 grandchildren, as well as Nieves and nephews who share grief at his passing. One son, Verl preceded him in death.
