Son of Newton Chase and Rosina Chase.

His first wife was Alvira A. Wright (1854 - 2/17/1901) who he married on 12/28/1874 in Troy, Vermont where he was the railroad station agent. Alvira was the daughter of Pasquel Wright and Anna Bickford and she had been born in Jay, Vermont. She and Abel divorced and in 1891 she married a Luther J. Leach. She died in Waterville, Vermont of "consumption of the blood" in 1901.

Husband of Fara Amanda Follansbee/Follensby (12/5/1858 - 1/28/1832) who he married on 4/30/1884 in Brighton, Vermont. His marriage card shows this was Abel's third marriage and that Abel was 51 years of age. This was Fara's first marriage and she was 26 years old. She was the daughter of Putney Follansbee/Follensby and Amanda Lucas and had been born in Maidstone, Vermont. Amanda died in St. Johnsbury, Vermont of starvation in 1932, probably due to her advanced age or illness.

The 1860 US Census shows him living at home with his mother, father and siblings. He is 27 years of age.

The 1880 US Census shows Abel is living in Bradford, Orange County, Vermont with his family as follows:

Abel served in the Civil War fighting for the Union cause. He enlisted on 5/10/1861 and served with Company "B", 3rd Regiment, Vermont Infantry and attained the rank of First Sergeant. He served under Major General W. F. "Baldy" Smith. Abel was wounded at Lee's Mills, Williamsburg and Antietam. In December, 1862, he was given an honorable discharge due to disability.

Abel worked many jobs in his life, including being a farmer, postmaster, railroad station agent, merchant in various surrounding communities, and as the town clerk of Jay, Vermont. In 1888, his general merchandise store in Jay, burned to the ground (Abel was living above the store at the time of the fire). He served int eh House of Representatives in 1869, 1870 and 1872 with duties as the Chairman of Committee on Military affairs. He was a Republican politically and a Methodist by faith.

Died in 1917 of "Surgical gangrene" and arteriosclerosis.
