Mary Catherine (Fidler) Heisler was born to Nathan and Leah Fidler Heisler on October 4, 1842, in Orwigsburg, Schuylkill Co., PA.
Mary's father developed TB when Leah was pregnant with her. As soon as possible after Mary Catherine was born, Leah took Nathan and their infant and traveled to Ohio so that Nathan could be treated by a doctor or clinic recommended to them. Either while traveling through Ohio, or after they arrived there, Nathan died, leaving Leah with a young family to raise. Leah Heisler returned to Schuylkill County PA with baby Mary Catherine. She lived as a young widow while raising her family for several years.

In 1846, Leah Heisler married 2) John Schultz, a wealthy businessman who had recently immigrated to America. John Schultz operated a logging company in Yellow Springs, Dauphin Co., and a sawmill in Llewellyn, Schuylkill, PA.

Most of her developing years, Mary Catherine was raised by her mother and step-father, John Schultz, along with her sister and three brothers, as well as her four step-siblings.

At some point, Leah and John built and operated a lodge in Yellow Springs, Dauphin County. Most likely Mary Catherine helped her mother with food preparations at the lodge, especially during the summer months when it was especially busy. In 1863, Mary Catherine married John Boyer Kaufman and started her own family.

Our grandmother, Estella, was the youngest child of that family. Estella remembers visiting the lodge during the summers as she was growing up. By that time, her mother, Mary Catherine, would travel to Yellow Springs to help her mother, Leah, with cooking and serving at the lodge. There was a tram that ran up the mountain that Estella and her cousin, Leah Heisler, used to travel to this place.

John and Leah retired in their beautiful home along the Main Street of Tremont.
In her later years, Leah suffered of stomach issues. Mary Catherine went to care for her mother until her death in February of 1893. However, John Schultz was also experiencing health issues as well, so Mary Catherine continued to be the main person to come to his (her step-father's) aid until his death a little over four months later. Unfortunately, in his will, he only acknowledged those who were his blood children, not the Heisler step-children.

After the Schultzes had both passed on, Mary Catherine, spent all her time in the store and house in Wiconisco until her husband, John Kaufman, died unexpectedly in 1904. Following John's death, Mary and her daughters, Estella and Leah, stayed on in Wiconisco for a short time and prepared the store and attached house for sale. Mary and her daughters moved to a small row house on Charlotte Street, Lancaster, PA so they could be closer to Estella's sister, Annie, and husband, Harry Cassel, who lived near Sporting Hill, not far from the city. Later on, Mary and Leah moved to a larger row house at 316 W. Lemon Street in Lancaster.

In 1921, Leah died, and so Lloyd, Estella, and Mary moved in and officially had the deed written so that both parties paid the mortgage for a joint ownership of the house. Mary Catherine died in that house in 1932, in her 90th year. She is buried with her husband, John Kaufman, daughter, Leah, and son, John Franklin in the family plot in the Calvary United Methodist Cemetery in Wiconisco, Dauphin County, PA.
