James B. Cahill, 75, of Dakota City passed away Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael Catholic Church in South Sioux City. Burial will be in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:30 to 8 p.m. today, with a Fourth Degree Knights Of Columbus Rosary at 7 p.m. followed by a chalice service, at St. Michael Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Becker-Hunt Funeral Home.

James Bartholomew Cahill, the son of Marie (Kramper) and Daniel Cahill, was born on July 10, 1936. He attended St. Michael's Grade School and was in the first graduating class. He graduated from Heelan High School in 1955. That year he was the State Of Iowa High School Indoor pole vaulting champion. That record still stands today. After graduation, he became a structural iron worker and served 29 and one half years as a business agent of Local 184. During this time, he served area union members as president of the Sioux City Building Trades Council and was on the Woodbury County Labor Council.

He married Mary Rush on July 6, 1956, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sioux City.

Jim was active in his church and served on St. Michael's parish council. He was a member of both the Third Degree and Fourth Degree Knights Of Columbus. He held various offices within the Knights Of Columbus. Jim loved raising and training quarter horses. He was a Dakota County 4-H leader for 20 years and served as president of the Dakota County Extension Committee. In 2009, he was honored by the Nebraska Fair Association for his 25 years of service on the Dakota County Fair Board. Mr. Cahill also served on the Dakota City Council for 12 years.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Mary (Rush) Cahill of Dakota City; three daughters, Dr. Cheryll and her husband, Scott Malcom, Margaret "Peggy" and her husband, Dennis Stolze and Tammy Cahill-Lane, all of Dakota City. He enjoyed his six grandchildren, Tessa and her husband, Lew Adams, Kally Malcom, Austin and Brandon Stolze, Tyler and Danielle Lane; his four great-grandchildren, Caelan, Camden and Amelia Adams and Kaedyn Rager. Jim is also survived by his brother, John; and three sisters, Helen Cain, Josephine Cain and Mary Ann Hartnett.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and his brother, Daniel.

Pallbearers will be Austin, Brandon and Dennis Stolze, Tyler Lane, Lew Adams and Scott Malcom.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Michael's School.
