Fern Gorringe OlsenOur dear, adoring mother, grandmother, and friend, Fern G. Olsen passed from this life on June 16, 2012. She was born on October 15, 1914 to Josephine Read and Edward Victor Gorringe in Oakley, Idaho. She was the eleventh of 13 children. Fern had a pleasant childhood growing up in Oakley. She loved to sing and performed with friends and sisters at church, at school functions, and even live on the local radio station in Twin Falls. In 1934, Fern married her "first date" and high school sweetheart, Victor R. Olsen. They started their family in the midst of the Great Depression and eventually moved to Ogden as Vic settled into his career with the railroad. Vic and Fern enjoyed the life they had together and spent many days and nights outdoors, fishing on the Salmon River. After 39 years of marriage and raising three fine children, Vic died of cancer in 1973, leaving Fern a widow for the next 39 years. But in all she did and experienced, Fern was a stellar example of enduring well to the end. She found joy in volunteer work and service to her neighbors. She assisted others in their homes as a Golden Hours homemaker. She volunteered at the Union Railroad Museum for over ten years, and was a lifelong member of the Ladies Railroad Auxiliary. She loved listening to and playing music. When Fern could drive, she would fill her car with women who she would take to church or other activities. She was an avid reader and an interesting writer. Fern is survived by two of her three children, Jean Hill (Ray, deceased) and Ted Olsen; 8 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and daughter-in-law, Mary Lou. She was preceded in death by her husband, Vic, and her oldest son, Wayne. Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, June 23, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Lindquist's Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd. A Viewing will be held on Saturday from 11:45 to 12:45 p.m. at the mortuary. Interment, Aultorest Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to the charitable organization of your choice.
