Edna Ellene Almond, 93, of Spearfish, passed away at Sturgis Regional Senior Care on Sunday, June 24, 2012.
Edna was born January 4, 1919 on a ranch near the Grand River in Harding County, SD. Her parents were Robert George Hobbs and Sophia Jane Howard Hobbs. She attended first and second grades in a country school until the family moved to Camp Crook. Just prior to starting her eighth year of schooling in 1932, the family moved to Spearfish. She graduated with honors from Spearfish High School in 1937. In the fall of that year she enrolled at Spearfish Normal School. Having acquired a teaching certificate, she taught, in the subsequent four years, the Englewood, Dumont, and Oakdale country schools in Lawrence County and the Grindstone country school near Philip, SD.
In 1942 she married William Howard Juso, one of the Juso family of Finnish carpenters who were well-known for their log constructions throughout the Black Hills. Their constructions included the massive log grandstand at the Deadwood rodeo grounds and the Annenberg Ranch A building on Sand Creek near Beulah, WY.
Edna worked as a psychiatric nursing assistant at Fort Meade Veterans Hospital near Sturgis for approximately 25 years, retiring in 1985. She was recognized as an outstanding employee and received a Helping Hand Award from the hospital. Her first husband was a cancer victim in 1983. Later, she married Earl Almond. Earl passed away in 1986.
Edna is survived by daughter, Ellene Jane Eldeen and husband Arvid Jr, Spearfish, and their two children, Laura and Kenneth and Laura's four children; Travis, Kayla, Alex and Tessa; daughter, Donna Mae Coneley, Spearfish, and her daughter, Sonya; son, Nels Corwin Juso and wife, Grace, Deadwood, and their two children, Kena and Jeremiah and Kena's two children, Kadynce and Aurora. Edna was the fourth child in a family of seven siblings. Preceding her in death were brothers; Robert, Albert, Alden, and Elden and sisters; Frances Franklin and Betty Wade. She is survived by one sibling, Thomas Hobbs, Rapid City.
She was active in civic affairs, having been the leader of the Roubiax Extension Club, Tinton Pines Extension Club, the Spearfish TOPS Club and president of the local chapter of the National Federation of the Blind. She taught Sunday school at Deadwood Methodist Church, recycled cards at the Senior Center and enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing, swimming, hiking and other active sports.
It was Edna's belief that each day she must do something extra for somebody else; most of the time it was something insignificant; sometimes it would be something more important. This life-long philosophy was derived from one of her mother's favorite radio's soap operas whose daily sign-off was a brief recitation, as follows: "There is a destiny that makes us brothers; none goes his way alone. All that we put into the lives of others comes back into our own."
Edna was also possessed with a grand sense of humor. She loved to tell inoffensive jokes, often ones that poked fun at herself or her older generation. Through the years, she wrote numerous letters to the editors of various newspapers conveying a message that often contained an element of humor.
Having outlived virtually all of her contemporaries, Edna has requested that a public memorial service not be held. She has left instructions that her remains be cremated and her ashes buried at the gravesite of her husband, William Juso in Roubaix Cemetery. A private service will be held at a later date.
Arrangements are under the care of with Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory of Spearfish.
