William enlisted for Civil War army service in Company E(Cleveland Grays), 1st Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, April 16, 1861 for a term of 3 months. He was mustered out with Company E, August 1, 1864. He then reenlisted in Company A, 7th Regiment, Ohio Volunteer Infantry, for a term of 3 years, Sept. 11, 1861. He was discharged Jan. 23, 1863 on a Surgeon's Certificate of Disability. His name is on Panel #1 in the Cuyahoga County Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument, Public Square, Cleveland, Ohio.

He was decapitated in an accident while laying railroad track, June 3 1864. See the Morning Leader(Cleveland, OH), issue of June 4, 1864.
