He was brevetted Major for gallantry against the Seminoles and achieved the rank of Lieutenant Colonel of the 5th Infantry on June 5, 1860. On September 23, 1861 Rains was appointed brigadier and assigned a command under D.H. Hill. In the spring of 1862, he created the anti- personnel mine. Gen. Rains became famous for his invention of land mines and anti-ship "torpedoes" (harbor mines).
