son of Abraham Groff; husband of Mary Ann Stout Groff; father of Mary Anne Groff Henderson, Fenton Groff, Rebecca Groff, Sarah Elizabeth Groff Henderson, Ruth Ann Groff Mabrey, Abbey Groff Roy, and Roseanne Groff; Private in 108th Regiment, Company E, 11th Cavalry Regiment, Harlan's Light Cavalry mortally wounded in action June 29, 1864 at the Battle of Reams Station, Dinwiddie County, Virginia during the seige of Petersburg, Richmond-Petersburg Campaign. Taken prisoner by Confederate Troops and transported to Petersburg he died June 30, 1864 as a result of those wounds in a Confederate Army Hospital.
