Niles J. Baker Dies Suddenly of Meningitis

Niles J. Baker, 46-year-old farmer living between here and Verdigre, passed away at 3:15 O'clock Saturday morning at a Norfolk hospital of spinal meningitis. Death came with shocking suddenness to both family and friends, for he was ill little more than a day. Friday forenoon has condition became serious and early in the afternoon he was rushed to Norfolk, where death occurred a short time later.

While meningitis was the direct cause of his death, a contributing factor was an attack of flu and ear infection suffered during the winter, from which he never fully recovered.

The son of A. A. and Nellie Baker, Niles John Baker was born August 23, 1892, on the farm which remained his home during his entire span of earthly life. At death he was 46 years, eight months and 13 days old.

As a youth he attended the public schools of Verdigre and Creighton, and subsequently studied at Boyles Business college in Omaha.

He was a member of the Elks' lodge.

Besides the large circle of friends he acquired during his lifetime, those left to mourn his untimely passing are his father and mother, two sisters, Helen, at home, and Mrs. Nellibee McMillan of Genoa, Nebr., two nephews, Richard and Robert McMillan of Genoa, and other relatives.

Because of the contagious nature of his fatal illness, funeral services were held only at Greenwood cemetery, where interment was made Sunday morning at 9 o'clock. Rev. D. S. Bornemeier, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated at the grave. A large assemblage gathered at the cemetery to pay a final tribute to a friend and neighbor all held in high esteem.
