Otto Furst Succumbs After Long Illness

An illness which began on last July proved fatal to Otto Furst on last Thursday. The end came at his home at 10:30 p.m. His death was attributed to hardening of the arteries. Mr. Furst, after six weeks of sickness, improved in health to such an extent that he was able to be up and around for two months thereafter. On Thanksgiving Day he was again stricken and was then constantly confined to his bed until his passing.

The devotion of his wife and daughter during his illness added greatly to his comfort and provided him encouragement to the last hours.

Mr. Furst served two terms as city councilman and before his sickness took a keen interest in city affairs. He was a member of the Creighton Masonic Lodge since 1916.

Although of a quiet, retiring disposition, Mr. Furst had a smile for everyone and possessed a large acquaintance here.

Funeral services were held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Federated church. The pastor, Rev. David C. Anderson, delivered the eulogy and was in charge of the service. A profusion of flowers surrounded the casket. A large assemblage of friends gathered for the last rites.

Members of the Masonic Lodge attended in a body and had charge of the services at the grave. Burial was made in Greenwood cemetery.

Relatives from out of town attending were; Mr. and Mrs. Herman Hasse of Laurel, Mrs. Charlotte Brunson, her daughter and son-in-law and sons, Carl Larson and Mrs. Axel Larson and her husband, all of Brunson, Ia.

Otto Furst was born in Kiel, Germany on January 10, 1858 and died January 16, 1936 at the age of 78 years and six days.

At the comparatively young age of sixteen years he crossed the Atlantic Ocean to America and then journeyed halfway across the continent to settle near Fremont, Neb.

Altho he had no relatives here to assist him in starting his new life in this county, he applied himself industriously to his work and five years later on October 2, 1879 was united in marriage to Rebecca Adelaide Garner of Dodge county.

To this union five children were born; Clarence and Dora, who have also passed on and Mrs. Ernest Larsen, Guy and Dewey. The two boys are now in California and Mrs. Larsen lives near here.

Mr. and Mrs. Furst united with the Methodist church in Keya Paha county in 1885. In 1910 the family moved to Creighton from Stanton, Nebr., where they had resided for about seventeen years. On February 10, 1915, his wife, who had been in poor health for a number of years, left his life for the one beyond.

On Sept. 5, 1916 he was united in marriage to Lena Prischman and since that time has lived in this city where his passing is mourned by many brethren and friends.

In addition to his three children he is survived by his wife, twelve grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
