Dorothy's adoptive parents were Carl G. Nygaard & Selma (Ruid) Nygaard.

Funeral services for Dorothy Rish, 81, of Gering, formerly of Creighton, will be held today, Wednesday, December 4, 2002 at the Brockhaus Funeral Home in Creighton. Reverend Dwight Albers will officiate the 2 p.m. service with interment in Greenwood Cemetery in Creighton.

Dorothy was born March 15, 1921 at University Hospital in Omaha. She was born Virginia Lee Bailey. She and her sister were placed for adoption with Child Saving Institute in Omaha.

Carl and Selma Nygaard of Colome, South Dakota adopted Dorothy into their loving home and family. She was christened Dorothy Jean Bothilda Nygaard.

The family later moved to Winnetoon, Nebraska and Dorothy took her early education at Bazile Mills. She completed High School in Creighton. Dorothy attended Wayne State Teachers College, where she received her teaching certificate. She became the teacher in Bazile Mills, where she had been a student.

While living with the Rish family to attend Creighton High School, Dorothy met Leo C. Rish. Dorothy and Leo married April 6, 1942 at the Lutheran Church in Winnetoon.

For the first few years, Leo was serving in the
Army and the couple spent time in Colorado and California. While Leo was stationed overseas, their first daughter, Nancy, was born.

When Leo returned, they moved to the Bazile Mills and Creighton area, where they farmed and Dorothy continued to teach school. Their second daughter, Christine, was born in 1946. The family later moved to Omaha, where a third daughter, Laurel was born in 1955.

Dorothy, Leo and Laurel moved to Tekamah, Nebraska and later to Chadron, where they lived for 26 years.

Dorothy located her biological sister, Millie Kiesel, having been separated since birth.

After her husband passed away in December of 1993, Dorothy moved back to Omaha to be near her daughter, Christine and family.

In June of 2000 she moved to Scottsbluff/Gering to be with her daughter, Laurel and family. Dorothy lived in Beverly Healthcare at the time of her death.

Dorothy was a dedicated servant to her Lord and was a member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America in Winnetoon, Omaha, Tekamah and Chadron over her lifetime.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother and one great grandson.

She is survived by three daughters and their families, Nancy and Forrest McCowan, Christine and Robert Blank, Laurel and Dan Huber and eight grandchildren.
