George was a WWII war veteran (Tech. Sgt.) in the Air Force for 12 years. He was an airplane mechanic and was licensed to taxi planes, not fly, because he was blind in one eye as a result of an accident when he was two years old. For a time, he was stationed at RAF Wethersfield. He broke his leg so badly there that he was missing bone on the lower part of his leg and the ankle. He always had to wear a brace after that so that he could walk, and the leg wouldn't give way. It happened when the family was walking on a concrete dock at the marina (ocean side of Mersea Island). He walked onto a slab to make sure it was safe, and it broke. His daughter, Beth, remembers him going down with the halves of the slab pinning him down.
He later worked in construction in post-military civilian life.
