DIES SUNDAY AT
PORT EDWARDS
A member of a family closely as-
sociated with the pioneer days and
development of the Tri-City area,
Mrs. Lida Edwards Alexander died
at her Elm Court residence in Port
Edwards at 9:30 Easter Sunday
morning after a long illness. She
was a direct descendant of some of
the first known settlers in Wood
county, her father, John Edwards,
establishing his home in the village
which now bears his name.
Mr. Edwards was born in Corn-
wall, England, in 1832 and came to
America with his parents in about
1840, the family coming to this area
a short time later. John Edwards,
Sr., and an associate, Henry Clin-
ton, erected a sawmill on the Wis-
consin river at Frenchtown. It was
the second sawmill of its kind to be
erected on the Wisconsin river and
the third in the entire state. The
first mill had been built only a few
years earlier at Whitney Rapids,
between Frenchtown, now Port Edwards,
and the present site of Nekoosa...
