6th Illinois Governor. The founder of Carrollton, Illinois, he served as Governor of Illinois from 1838 to 1842. Previous to his gubernatorial career he served as a Ranger during the War of 1812, the first Sheriff of Green County, as an Illinois State Senator in the 4th and 5th General Assemblies (1824 to 1828), and in the Black Hawk War as Commander of a spy battalion. A monument to him stands today at the Carrollton Court House.
