Chester Curtis Barr of Williamsburg died on Aug. 9, 2009. He was 87.

A former resident of Baltimore, Md., he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 65 years, Violet; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Barr of St. George, W.Va.; and four brothers, Virgil Ray Barr, Estel E. Barr, John Jr., and Kenneth Smith Barr.

He was born March 27, 1922, in Parsons, W.Va. He attended Parsons Senior High and completed plumbing school in Baltimore. He was a member of the CCC during the Depression, building CCC camps and state parks in West Virginia. A proud member of "The Greatest Generation," he served as a Navy Gunner 1st Class in the Atlantic, Mediterranean, and Pacific theatres during World War II.

Known as "Chet," he never met a stranger, and had many friends in church and everywhere he lived. He was a baker, employed for many years by A&P Bakery in Baltimore, and was a member of the AFLCIO. He was a member of Mt. Caramel Primitive Baptist Church in Bel Air, Md.

After retirement, he devoted his life to his wife, Violet, his family, his church, and friends. He lovingly cared for his wife, who had Alzheimer's the last three years of her life.

He is survived by Christine Collins and her husband, Mercer; grandchildren, Rachael Smith and her husband, Dan, and Ron A. Campana Jr.; great-grandsons, Nathan and Calvin Smith; sister, Mary White of Davis, W.Va.; cousin, Donnie Barr; nieces and nephews from the Edwards and Barr families; and extended family members from the Campana and Collins families.

A graveside service will be held Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 2 p.m. at Gardens of Faith Chapel, 5598 Trumps Mill Rd., Baltimore, officiated by Elder Steven Bloyd and Mt. Caramel Primitive Baptist Church.
