Darlene Margaret Abbey, age 81, died Monday, June 25, 2012 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, June 28, 2012 at the Hawarden Community Church with Pastor Stan Vandersall officiating. Burial will follow at the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon till 4 p.m. on Wednesday at the Porter Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. at the Hawarden Community Church.
Darlene was born September 21, 1930 in Hawarden, Iowa, the daughter of Marie Peters. She was baptized and confirmed at the Trinity Lutheran Church. In Hawarden on February 27, 1948, Darlene married Orland D. Abbey. Together they resided in Hawarden. Darlene was a waitress at Tom's and BJ's Cafe and also at the Avalunch. Later, she worked at Otis Radio. Orland passed away September 12, 1988. Darlene enjoyed playing bingo, spending time with family, and dancing. She was also a member of the Hawarden Community Church.
Darlene is survived by her son, Larry (Cammy) Abbey of Elk Point, SD; 2 daughters, Orlene (Allen) Van Noort of Hawarden and Cindy Abbey of Fort Collins, CO; one sister, Donna Case of Sioux City; 8 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Darlene was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Orland; and infant son, Jon.
