OBSEQUIES OF JAMES H. VAN METER -
About a month since we made mention of Dr. Van Meter's being in town and returning to Saline with an invalid brother, James H. Van Meter. The brother lingered, suffering much from the complaint of whose exact cause the physicians could not form a conclusive opinion, and died at Malta Bend on Thursday last. The remains were brought at once to this place, and a post mortem examination was made on Friday in the interest of medical science, at the office of Dr.'s Pettijohn & Wood, at which Dr.'s Roberts, Cooper and Torrey were present, by which it was ascertained that the biliary duct (leading from the gall to the intestines) was entirely closed by abnormal thickening and growth. The obstruction of this duct has been ascribed to calcerous formation, and no instance of the kind found is known.
The funeral took place the same afternoon, and the Masonic fraternity, of which the deceased was a member, turned out, and the impressive rites of the Order were observed at the burial place near the residence of J. R. Van Meter Esq. The deceased was a very estimable young man. He leaves a young wife and one child to mourn his loss.
