In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, an infant Bobby Lee Long and James "Pete" Long.
He had retired from Pepsi Cola after 22 years of service. He loved the Lord and served as a member and in many capacities of the Marion Church of the Nazarene. He was a lifetime member of the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667 and the Civitan Club of Marion where he was past President and Civitan of the year.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Martha Livingston Long; one son, John Earl Long and wife, Kelly of Florida; one brother, R.C. Long and wife, Joyce of Abingdon; one sister, Doris Vaught and husband, Sidney of Abingdon; two precious grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Long and Zachary Tyler Long of Florida.
John is also survived by many loving in-laws, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and close cousins. He also leaves behind to rejoice in his memory family and friends, especially his church family and his wonderful neighbors.
Funeral services will be held at 8 p.m. on Friday, June 29, 2012, with Pastors "sons" Paul Shallenburg, Michael Hopkins and Jud Compton officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday at Rosewood Memorial Gardens with full military honors rendered by the Francis Marion V.F.W. Post 4667. Pallbearers will be the men of the Church of the Nazarene.
