Chief Mottinger first joined the United States Navy in August of 1937 and served honorably until August of 1948. He was a World War II Navy Veteran and saw sea duty on the USS Tucker (DD-374), present during the Pearl Harbor attack on December 7th, 1941; the USS Hollis (APD-86), the USS Audubon (APA-149) and the USS Mahnomen County (LST-912). He was awarded the Navy Good Conduct medal, the American Defense Service medal with Fleet clasp, the American Theater Campaign medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign medal and the World War II Victory medal.
