The neighborhood was saddened by the death of Mrs. Johnson, which occurred Thursday evening. Mrs Johnson has been a great sufferer for several months. She has made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Carl Schmele, since August. Funeral services were held at Mr. Schmele’s home last Sunday, a minister from Lead officiating. The remains were interred in the Newell [Hope] cemetery.

Kaisa Maria Tuomas Hurula was born 27 OCT 1861 at Tornio, Lappi, Finland to Juho Erik Erkinpoika Tuomas Mäkikummu and his wife Britta Lena Korpi. She was the second of nine children. Kate came to America at the age of 20 with her brother August Tuomas Hurula, 21, (#193876391) in 1881 and settled near Dassel, Meeker, Minnesota. Years later, August brought two of their youngest siblings to America: Isaak Thomas, #15491192, and Anna Jossefina Thomas Johnson, #132682400.
Tuomas/Thomas was their family name, but the custom in Finland at the time was to use the farm name which was Hurula. Both August and Kate used the last name Hurula. The other siblings did not live at the Hurula farm and used the last name Thomas.

On 23 Jul 1884 Kate married Fredrick John Johnson in Duluth, Minnesota. Fred was also born in Finland and worked primarily as a miner. Fred and Kate lived in Ironwood, Wisconsin where their first child Fredrick Jalmer Johnson was born. From 1890-1894 they were back in Meeker County, MN, where three more children were born. Finally, they followed the mine works to South Dakota where their last three children were born. They lived in rural Butte County in an area called Horse Creek.
