James Field Vose was the youngest son of Captain Thomas Vose and Sarah George. He was elected Ensign of the Thomaston Guards in 1825 and promoted to Lieutenant in 1833. James was a farmer and in later life a landlord. He married Sophia P. Andrews on January 10, 1833 in Warren, Maine. They raised five children although the youngest died when less than a year old.
