Paul was a farmer and of the Lutheran faith. Prior to departing North Carolina he worked as a millwright. His father was a millwright and ran a cotton gin and a wool carding mill.

Paul's granddaughter Eliza relayed the story to her own granddaughters, of her grandfather's trek on horseback from North Carolina through Kentucky and into Missouri, with his three sons.
