"Robert Eli Edry Calhoun Hanna was born in Greenbrier county, (now) West Virginia, July 6, 1861. Robert Calhoun Hanna was his father, and his mother is Catherine Elizabeth [Ott] Hanna. His father was shot in the arm by Confederate soldiers and died from the effects, and in the same year, with his mother, the subject of this sketch went to Kentucky. In 1865, they came to Lincoln county, which has since been their home. The father of Mr. Hanna was of Irish descent, and his mother was of dutch ancestry. He is combining the labors of farm life with the profession of teaching, and may be addressed at Griffithsville, Lincoln County, WV."

In 1870 Catherine E Ott Hanna (1834-?) is mistakenly listed as Ott, Hanna with her 3 children: Robert E, Susan Georgia [m. Robert Maxwell Campbell, 1877 in Putnam, WV] (1857-?) and a brother David Edward who prob died young (1858-1880?). On 1880 census David, bro-in-law, is living with Gerogia's family in Putnam, WV).
Robert Eli was a schoolteacher and on 23 Jun 1886 was married by Elisha Thackers to one of his former students in Winfield, Putnam, WV. Her name was Mary Margaret Henderson, dau of John Henderson (1827-1871) and Elizabeth Ann Beckett (1825-1891). Robert E & Mary M had at least 12 children including 5 sons, 4 of whom died under the age of 5 years.
