Marie Hopper Sowders, 86 of Middlesboro, passed away Monday, April 30, 2012 at the Middlesboro Nursing and Rehabilitation Facility. She was born July 8, 1925 at Speedwell, Tenn., a daughter of the late James and Matilda Hopper. She was a lifelong resident of Middlesboro and a devoted member of the Southside Baptist Church for over 50 yrs. She loved gardening, was retired from Roses Department Store and was a member of the Shawanee, Tenn. Eastern Star. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husbands, James Bass and Herbert Sowders and daughter, Linda Bass.

Survivors include: children, Everette Bass of Altamonte Springs, Fl., Brenda Bass Lane of Harrogate, Tenn., James (Gail) Bass of Morganton, Ga., and Viva (David) Terry of Orlandon, Fl.; sisters, Ethel Evans of Speedwell, Tenn. and Charlene Hopper of Middlesboro; brothers, Mickey (Betty) Hopper of Monroe, Mich., Carl Hopper of Middlesboro, Allen (Sandy) Hopper of Harrogate, Tenn., Connie (Sue) Hopper and Boyd (Lillian) Hopper, both of Middlesboro; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Creech Funeral Home Chapel with Revs. Jay Sulfridge and Jonathan Hendrickson presiding. Music will be by Eddie Adkins. Interment will follow in the Carr Cemetery. Pallbearers will be family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at the Creech Funeral Home.
