DR. WILLIAM G. BLACKARD, DIABETES EXPERT, DIES AT 62 LED ENDOCRINOLOGY DIVISION AT MCV

Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) - Saturday, June 29, 1996

Dr. William Griffith Blackard, a nationally known diabetes expert and former chairman of the endocrinology and metabolism division at the Medical College of Virginia at VCU, died of cancer Thursday in a local hospital.

Dr. Blackard, who retired in May because of poor health, was 62 and lived in Richmond. He had worked at MCV since 1975.

"His consummate knowledge of the entire field of endocrinology made it possible for Dr. Blackard to contribute to our knowledge of nearly every aspect of endocrinology. He was a true Renaissance man," said Dr. Hermes Kontos, dean of the MCV School of Medicine.

Dr. Blackard had written more than 130 papers, mostly about diabetes, contributed numerous chapters to medical textbooks and published more than 200 abstracts. He served on the editorial boards of medical journals including Diabetes and The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism.

In 1990, Dr. Blackard received VCU's Distinguished Scholar Award.

A Baltimore native, he earned bachelor's and medical degrees from Duke University. He did his internship and residency at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in New York. He did clinical and research fellowships at Duke University.

From 1961 to 1963, Dr. Blackard served in the U.S. Public Health Service, working with the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission in Hiroshima, Japan.

Before coming to MCV, he was professor of medicine and chairman of the divison of endocrinology and metabolism at Louisiana State University School of Medicine for 11 years.

He was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha honorary medical fraternity, was a Markle Scholar in Academic Medicine and received a Sinsheimer Award while he was visiting professor at the University of Geneva in Switzerland during the early 1970s.

He was a director of the American Diabetes Association and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute Review Board.

He was chairman of the National Institute of Health Metabolism Study Section and was president of the Southern Section of the American Federation of Clinical Research.

Dr. Blackard was a member of the Richmond Academy of Medicine, the Richmond Cotillion and the Westwood Racquet Club.

Survivors include his wife, Attelia Shealy Blackard; a daughter, Attelia Blackard of Charlotte, N.C.; two sons, W. Griffith Blackard Jr. of Birmingham, Ala., and Kirkland L. Blackard of Richmond; and a sister, Marlee Clarke of Charlottesville.
