Ethel Leavens, age 99, passed away on Friday morning, Oct. 28, 2011, at Augustana Chapel View Care Center in Hopkins, Minn., with her daughter and grand-daughter at her side.

She was born Ethel Siler in the countryside near Watertown, S.D., on May 4, 1912.

She married Arthur Leavens in 1930 in Dunn County. They had three children, Grace (Hanson), Edina, Minn., George, Las Vegas, Nev., and Raymond, Payson, Ariz. Ethel also had 10 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Arthur passed away in 1987. Years later, Ethel reconnected with her teenage friend, Ray Lindsley, who died in 2004.

Family was Ethel's top priority. She loved to cook and did so from childhood. She worked in farming, sales, laundromat services, long-term care, and food services (Stout State University in Menomonie). Ethel sewed for the war effort in the 1940s, having sons and brothers both in WWII. She always had time, a smile and a kind word for everyone. Love and prayers were her gifts to all.

The funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at St. Joseph Church, 1310 Main Street, Hopkins, with a fellowship to follow at the American Legion Post across the parking lot from the church. The burial will be at 3:30 p.m. at the Popple Creek American Cemetery with a fellowship to follow at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Popple Creek.
