Coy Lee Johnson, 68, of George Hildebran School Rd., Hickory, passed away Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, following a period of declining health.

Mr. Johnson was born Aug. 2, 1943 in Catawba County to the late Ray O. Johnson and Tessie Huffman Johnson. He was owner and operator of Johnson's Love Bug Garage, originated the first responder program in Burke County in 1979, and was former Chief of the George Hildebran Fire Department for more than 21 years. He was a member of Philadelphia Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Lingerfelt Johnson. Survivors include his daughters, Darlene Huffman and husband, Kevin, and Jessica Frederick and husband, Matthew, both of George Hildebran; three sisters, Alene Martin and Marie Denny, both of George Hildebran, and Margie Cline, of Hickory; one brother, Larry Johnson and wife, Amy, of Hickory; and canine companion, Bubbles.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday July 1, at Penelope Baptist Church. The Revs. Dale Faulkenbury and Rick Hildebran will officiate. Interment will follow at Catawba Memorial Park. The family will receive friends today (Saturday, June 30) from 5 to 7 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Service in Valdese, where the body will remain until placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the funeral hour. Box 615, Hildebran, NC 28637, or to the George Hildebran Fire Dept., 7470 George Hildebran School Rd., Connelly Springs, NC 2861.
