Margie Nell Russell Carpenter was born Dec. 22, 1924, to the late Walter M. and Emma Buchanan Russell in Roaring Springs. She was raised on a farm in the Dry Lake community of Dickens County. Summers were spent on her aunt Beulah K. Birds ranches in Post, Texas, and St. Johns, Ariz., learning Indian culture and participating in Indian ceremonies. She assisted with archeology hunts and digs with the University of Arizona at the ranch in St. Johns, Ariz. She graduated from Spur High School and attended both Texas Tech University and the University of Texas. Margie Nell Russell married W.C. "Bo" Carpenter on Dec. 16, 1948, at St. Johns United Methodist Church in Lubbock. Survivors include her husband of 54 years, W.C. "Bo" Carpenter of Lubbock; two sons, Steve Carpenter and wife Pam of Lubbock; Rev. Charles Carpenter and wife Delores of North Richland Hills; grandchildren, Caleb, Jordan, Dustin Lee, Derek, Daniel, Cynthia, Angela, and Taylor Carpenter; great- grandchildren, Devan, Tavia, Jasmine, Brenda Faith, and Joshua; her sisters, Walterena Russell Clack of Lanham, Md., and Wanda Ruth Steele and Linda Beth Liner, both of Lubbock; brothers, Charles M. Russell of Dallas and Royal D. Russell of Fort Worth, and numerous close friends. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Brenda Beth, on Sept, 14, 1982; her parents; and a brother, Stanley Allen Russell. Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Franklin-Bartley Chapel with Pastor Paul Jantzen and her son, Rev. Charles Carpenter, officiating. Burial will follow at Terrace Cemetery in Post.
