Gilbert's first wife was Kate Weatherby. Not long after the marriage, on the 24th day of May in 1870, Kate gave birth to a daughter and named her Bertha.
Unfortunately, only seven years later, on the 26th day of February 1878, Kate died. Leaving her young daughter in the care of her father. Kate was only thirty-nine years old.
The insciption on her gave reads; "Faithful and True". She is buried along side Gilbert at Greenlawn.
