James William Sowers was the son of George Washington and Emeline (Kennedy) Sowers.

He married Martha Eliza Miller on Sept. 22, 1889 in Vinton Co., OH. They had at least 5 children, all born in Vinton Co.:

- Edna Flo Sowers Smith Eaton Gottke (1890-?)
- Blanche Verna Sowers Woltz (1892-1977)
- Grover Cleveland Sowers (1894-1966)
- J. N. Sowers (1898-?)
- Ethel M. Sowers Herrold (1898-1972)

(Note: There are a lot of discrepancies surrounding James' date of birth. His death certificate lists his date of birth as Sept. 29, 1861 in Vinton Co., OH, and his age at death as 63y, 3m, 20d. His grave marker, which appears as if it could be newer than 1925, says he was born on Sept. 29, 1864, and his age at death was 60y, 5m, 18d, which would actually make his date of birth Oct. 1, 1864. Census records 1880-1910 put his year of birth at 1863-1865, and 1920 at 1868. So I am going to go with the majority and use Sept. 29, 1864 as his DOB here.)
